Workplace Accountability:
No trip down the Yellow Brick Road
In The Oz Principle: Getting Results Through Individual and
Organizational Accountability, authors Roger Connors, Tom Smith,
and Craig R. Hickman suggest that we all have the ability to move
beyond victimization and overcome obstacles, accept responsibility,
and rise to new heights of achievement.
Achieving accountability can be difficult, especially when people
suffer from feelings of inadequacy or excuse poor performance by
playing the “blame game.” Using numerous character analogies
from The Wizard of Oz, the authors show how people can be empowered
to overcome ineffectiveness and get the results they want. Connors,
Smith, and Hickman call it breaking through “above the line.”
Using systematic, easy-to-understand directives, the authors outline
steps for shedding a victim mentality and achieving above-the-line
leadership qualities. Employees replace inaction and poor performance
with a new attitude of accountability that allows them to overcome
problems and roadblocks. A series of self-assessment charts and
quizzes are interspersed throughout this practical, easy-to-understand
book, allowing readers to chart progress as they learn to See it,
Own it, Solve it, and Do it – ultimately moving towards full
accountability and greater success. ‡
